Determining whether or not your Internet marketing campaign is working for you is a very important part of the advertising process. This is so important because while there is a great deal of Internet marketing which can be done without a great deal of expense, other types of Internet marketing do have financial costs associated with them. Also, in both cases there is a time and energy burden to orchestrating the Internet marketing.

For all of these reasons it is important for business owners to continuously evaluate their marketing techniques and strategies to determine what is working and what is not. This will help the business owner to focus his efforts on marketing strategies which are providing positive results as opposed to those which are either not providing results or are only providing lackluster results. This article will examine a few different marketing strategies as well as how business owners can evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies.

Affiliate marketing is certainly one of the most cost effective Internet marketing strategies available. This marketing strategy involves having other website owners known as affiliates post an advertisement on their websites to direct Internet traffic to your website. This marketing strategy is cost effective because in most cases the affiliate is only paid when he produces a desired result such as enticing an Internet user to click through the advertisement or to purchase a product or service once they click through the ad. While the business owner is only paying for the advertisement when it produces a desired effect, it is still worthwhile to evaluate the effectiveness of these ads to determine whether or not they are working well.

Fortunately affiliate marketing ads have a natural feedback mechanism which makes it easy to evaluate how well the ad is working. This feedback is provided in the form of code imbedded in the advertisement which specifies which affiliate generated the website visitors. This information is provided for the purposes of issuing payment to the affiliate but it can also provide the business owner with useful information on which affiliate ads are the most effective. This information is especially useful when the affiliates are posting different ads. The business owner may conclude the ads posted by the more successful affiliates are more appealing to potential customers and may opt to use this style of ad for all of their affiliates.

Business owners who use Internet marketing strategies such as posting on message boards to promote their business might want to consider asking customers to complete a short survey when making a purchase. This survey can include useful demographic information which is always helpful for marketing as well as information regarding where the customer learned of the products or services you offer. Including the message board web address as one of the responses will give you a good indication of whether or not the message boards are helping to drive customers to your website. You may also have some unofficial feedback in terms of the response to your postings on the message board. If the general consensus is in support of your posts, you may infer you are generating some interest in your business or website through this tactic.

Finally, an Internet marketing strategy can be evaluated by studying website traffic results as well as sales receipts. Anytime you implement a new Internet marketing strategy or technique it is worthwhile to study your website traffic reports and sales receipts carefully to determine whether or not there is a spike in either traffic or sales immediately after the marketing effort. For example, if you send out an e-newsletter to those who have requested additional information about your products or services, you may notice there is an increase in traffic or sales soon afterwards. This is a good indication the e-newsletter was well received and effective. However, if there is not a marked increase in traffic or sales subsequent to the e-newsletter it indicates the marketing effort was not effective.

no spam!

There is a fine line between advertising and spam and unfortunately many business owners do not understand the difference between the two. This is important because while a cleaver, well planted Internet marketing campaign can help to attract new customers and keep existing customers loyal, spam is likely to alienate both new customers and existing customers. This can be extremely damaging to profit margins for the business owners. This article will take a look at a few basic Internet marketing strategies such as banner ads, email campaign and message board posts and describe how each can quickly cross the line from cleaver advertising to spam.

Banner ads are one of the most popular strategies which accompany an Internet marketing plan. These ads are usually ads which appear at the top of websites and span the width of the website. It is from this appearance that they earned the name banner ads but actually banner ads can refer to ads of a variety of different sizes and shapes which appear in an array of different locations on a website. In many cases the business owner purchases advertising space on these websites but the banner ad may also be placed as part of an exchange or an affiliate marketing campaign.

Banner ad exchanges are situations in which one business owner posts a banner ad on his website in exchange for another business owner posting his banner ad on the other website. These agreements may be made individually between business owners with complementary businesses or as part of exchanges facilitated by a third party.

In the case of affiliate marketing, an affiliate posts an advertisement for your business in exchange for compensation when the banner ad produces a desired effect such as generating website traffic or generating a sale. The terms of these agreements are determined beforehand and are generally based on a scale of pay per impression, pay per click or pay per sale or lead.

Now that you understand what banner ads are, it is also important to understand how they can be overused and appear to be spam. Judiciously placing your banner ad on a few websites which are likely to attract an audience similar to your target audience is smart marketing, placing your banner ad on any website which will display the ad regardless of the target audience can be construed as spam. Internet users who feel as though your banner ads are everywhere they turn will not likely take your business seriously and are not likely to purchase products or services from you as a result of your banner ads.

Email campaigns can also be very useful tools in the industry of Internet marketing. These campaigns may involve sending periodic e-newsletters filled with information as well as advertisements, short, informative email courses or emails offering discounts on products and services.

Loyal customers who opt into your email list will likely not view these emails as spam and may purchase additional products and services from your business as a result of this marketing strategy. Additionally, potential customers who have specifically requested additional information on your products and services will also find this type of marketing to be useful. However, email recipients who did not request information are likely to view your emails as spam.

Harvesting email addresses in a deceptive manner and using these addresses to send out mass emails will likely always be considered to be spam.

Finally, message boards provide an excellent opportunity for business owners to obtain some free advertising where it will be noticed by members of the target audience. If the products and services you offer appeal to a specific niche, it is worthwhile to join message boards and online forums related to your industry of choice.

Here you will find a large population of Internet users who may have an interest in your products. You might consider including a link to your business in your signature or posting the link when it is applicable to the conversation. However, care should be taken to carefully review the message board guidelines to ensure you are not doing anything inappropriate. This technique is smart marketing.

Conversely, replying to every message with a link to your website when it is not relevant to the conversation is likely to be construed as spam by other members. Once they begin to view your posts as spam, they are not likely to visit your website via the links you post.

We all need to advertise to increase our website traffic but need to be careful that we do not cross the line into spamming. Spamming will not only lose you potential customers but is also illegal and can get your website shut down. So advertise! But, do not spam.

When someone sends an email, they would prefer to get an immediate response.  Although most responses take time, customers and potential buyers prefer to get their response immediately.  To give an immediate response to an email, you can use an autoresponder.  They are a great way to let someone know that you received their email, and that you are taking care of their request.  Autoresponder messages can be custom tailored, and look much better than simple thank you pages.

Some Internet marketers use their autoresponders to save themselves time and make their customers feel a bit more at ease until they get the time to handle the request or issue. If you set up your autoresponder in your email account, you’ll find that there are many advantages, although the biggest advantage is answering email questions and acting as tech support.

Your autoresponder can act as tech support for your business by answering any questions you receive via email.  To make this work smoother, you can always add answers as you go or just include the most common preset answers in your autoresponder.  If your website has a technical support page, you can include different addresses for each specific question.  When a customer emails the address, the autoresponder at the other end will automatically send them the answer.

Using an autoresponder to answer your email questions can drastically cut down the amount of emails that you need to answer.  Instead of having to wait on your response, your customer will get an instant reply.  Customers love to get instant replies, which is one of the main reasons why autoresponders are so popular with online businesses and Internet marketing.  If customers start to ask questions that your autoresponder isn’t set up for, you can easily add answers to it anytime you need to.

No matter what the question may be, you can use an autoresponder to answer it.  With most autoresponders, you simply type the answer to a question or other piece of information into a text file.  You can include an answer section on your website as well, where customers will ask their questions.  If you set it up so that it includes a mail form, you can add several pages to the answer section.  Once a customer sends the question, the autoresponder should immediately send them an answer.

For a growing Internet business, an autoresponder is a must have.  If you deal with a lot of customers, you’ll find this tool to be very beneficial.  No matter what type of company you may have online, an autoresponder will help you stand out in a crowd – and keep you looking good night and day.  When customers email you and get an immediate response – they won’t forget it.

Outsourcing is a popular way to have defined office tasks completed by someone outside the company. Outsourcing is becoming a common business practice in today’s society.  Outsourcing enables many business owners to continue their operations, but at reduced costs. With that in mind, it is important to know that outsourcing is not right for all businesses. Before making the decision to outsource your office management tasks, it is advised that you examine the pros and cons of doing so.

As for the pros or plus sides to outsourcing your office management duties and tasks, you will find that there are a number of them.  Perhaps, the biggest pro to outsourcing your office management is the money you are able to save money.  Outsourcing a number of your needed tasks can actually save you a considerable amount of money, especially overtime. Business owners who make the decision to outsource to other countries, such as India, are able to save the most money, due to lower living wages.  With that in mind, even if you use outsourced workers from the United States, the cost should be lower than hiring an in-house employee. This is because you can hire all workers as contract workers, instead of in-house workers. This should save you money on healthcare and other benefits.

Another pro or plus side to outsourcing your office management duties is one that is best for small to medium sized business owners.  This is because outsourced work is often done offsite; either in a call center or at the home of a home based worker.  This can work out to your advantage if you are interested in closing down your office. For example, if you run a dental office, but you are interested in taking a vacation or simply just leaving work early a few days a month, outsourcing enables you to do so without any complications. Having an offsite office manager enables you to leave your office without having to worry about who is left behind or if your office will be properly locked up. This comfort and peace of mind is nice for many.

Although there are a number of pros or plus sides to outsourcing your office management duties, it is also important to focus on the cons or downsides as well. One of those cons or downsides is what outsourcing can do to your local economy. Although one outsourced worker may not make a huge difference on your local economy and local residents searching for a job, it is important to remember that outsourcing is becoming a common practice for many business owners. This often leaves fewer jobs for local residents.  These are the same local residents that likely support your business and bring you income.  With that in mind, it is also important to examine your role as a business owner; your goal is to make money.  Still, you may want to focus on this important fact, especially if you would layoff a full-time worker of yours to outsource their duties.

It is also important to remember that not all office management duties can be outsourced. As you likely already know, office managers perform a wide range of tasks. These tasks may include supervising other office personnel. This supervision may not be possible with an outsourced office manager.  If your office manager would be responsible for overseeing other office staff members, it may be best for you to hire an in-house office manager, as opposed to outsourcing.  If cost is a concern of yours, you may want to offer one of your secretaries or other staff members the chance to supervise, for a small increase in pay.

The pros and cons outlined above are just a few of the many that you will want to take into consideration, when determining if your office management tasks can be or should be outsourced. Just remember, while outsourcing office management tasks can save money make sure it is the right thing for your company.
